Gathering his student, Darrin and Corwin made their escape, but were stopped when Darrin was forced to confront Tremayne. In a fierce lightsaber battle, the two exchanged lightsaber blows. Unfortunately, during the fight, Tremayne proved to be the better fighter and severely injured Darrin. Jumping up to defend his master, Corwin then took the fight off of Darrin and engaged Tremayne himself.

Managing to sever Tremayne's arm and severely injure his face, Corwin allowed Darrin and himself to complete their escape. Unfortunately for Darrin, the battle he had with Tremayne proved to be his last. A few days after their escape, Darrin succumbed to his wounds and became one with the Force. However, before he died, Darrin was able to pass along what he knew so that in essence, he could continue the fight against the Emperor.
